A top British actor who was educated in Louth has been nominated for a National Television Award.

Matthew MacFadyen attended Kidgate School in the town, where his mother also taught drama, before moving on to boarding school Oakham in R



The 38-year-old is best known for his breakthrough role in BBC spy drama Spooks, where he played an Mi5 agent, and for starring as Mr Darcy opposite Keira Knightley in a big-screen version of Pride and Prejudice.

However his nomination for the prestigious National Television Awards is in the Best Detective category for his portrayal of DI Edmund Reid in dark Victorian crime thriller Ripper Street.

A final shortlist will be revealed before the awards ceremony next January.
